Travel Heals

Launched in 2009 as a community for people who love travel and creativity, Travel Heals is a photo-centric travel brand that offers insider info on what will be your favorite places to adventure to, and how to adventure to them. Here are some things that we believe in:

  • We believe that travel can be a great way to promote health and growth, both physically and spiritually.
  • We believe that travel is one of the best educators out there.
  • We believe that the outdoors has inherent healing powers.
  • We believe in your travel goals, that you reach your travel goals, and that you should probably make those travel goals BIGGER.
  • We believe that the pursuit of happiness is best sought with travel and adventure.

Here’s our point: If you have an inner longing for adventure or to visit a certain place, we believe that your body, soul, spirit, mind, and heart probably need it. Because travel heals.

After 10 years of increasing chronic pain, loss of energy, and multiple misdiagnoses, I was finally given a true diagnosis of Lyme disease. Along with treatment and other lifestyle changes, I prayerfully concluded that simplifying my life to include the things I really care about needed to be part of my treatment regimen. This included family and friends, my dogs, the outdoors, and travel.

Even through all my symptoms and treatment of Lyme, I never wanted to stop traveling. Although I had to take it down quite a few notches, I realized that travel helped me out so much more than many specialized treatments for Lyme. Travel and the outdoors energizes me because I loves them so much. I sleep better outside with the fresh, crisp air. I have motivation to see and do the next thing at all times, so I am more active when in the outdoors. For me, it is so hard NOT to worship God at all times in this setting, so I am constantly thinking of Him and how much He has blessed me despite my hardships. Some people go to conferences to hear people speak and sing about the Lord and they come back refreshed and renewed, motivated to better their walk with Jesus. But give me the birds singing His original praises, the mountains telling of His power, or the wind making a perfect analogy for faith (among many other things), and THAT is what I need to feel refreshed and renewed.

That doesn’t mean that travel is not hard on me. While in Glacier National Park, we did a particularly hard hike to a glacier up high in the mountains. The hike up was difficult, sure, but the hike down KILLED me. I’m talking pain that made me just want to die. I’m serious. My hips, knees, ankles, and all the joints in my feet were on fire the whole way down, with sharp pain shooting up and down my legs, and even into my back. If it hadn’t been for my husband Mark and my trekking poles, I probably wouldn’t have made it all the way down. Because of that hike, we weren’t able to do much the next day because of how much pain I was in.

But I DO NOT regret going on that hike. That hike to Grinnell Glacier was my favorite thing I did the whole trip. I got to see beauty the whole way up and back, I was able to stick my hands in a milky blue glacier lake, and I was able to see a glacier up close before it melts in a few years. Even though the way back was some of the most pain I’ve been in my whole life, I wouldn’t change that experience for anything.

This is all to say that some things in life are worth the pain. For me, seeing and experiencing the outdoors is worth the pain I go through in order to see and experience it. I am able to take a trip like this because I value it and I won’t let my pain stop me completely from doing the things in life that I love. I am more than my disease.

This is what I want to share with the world, and with those who suffer. That travel heals.

We want Travel Heals to be a brand that brings awareness to Lyme disease and other invisible illnesses. We who suffer from these things are very misunderstood and under-represented. We want Travel Heals to inspire those who suffer to make the things they love part of their treatment plan.

Here at Travel Heals, we will do our best to inspire you, teach you, and provide you with resources to better equip you to make travel a part of your healing process.

If you suffer from Lyme disease, a mental illness, an invisible illness, cancer, a physical disability, or anything else and love to travel, I’d love to hear and/or share your story of how travel helps you heal and cope. E-mail me, and you could be featured on Travel Heals.
